Arnold's Retirement

The date was actually December 14, 2025. At the time, I didn't realize that it was likely Arnold's last hunt. Arnold was part and parcel of this team for a decade. He started out being a pain, where I had to carry him across rivulets, but progressed to being  super mobile. Early on, he'd wander off, get lost, etc. Sometimes he chased feral hogs, hence the radio collar and electric shock collar....But he got better and better, and probably made the difference in a half dozen squirrels each season, plus he was our buddy. Right through last season he was good, but since the summer he's slowed down a lot. I don't remember too much about this particular hunt, except he was with us.  Arnold and Cisco keyed off each other sometimes, and Arnold would always bark frantically when Cisco grabbed a squirrel up in a tree.  More to come.......

Probably done.....

A successful season is ending it with the buzzards healthy and having caught some game. 25/26 was a successful season..... Unfortunately, I had to retire Arnold as he's just getting old. He's slow, limping some, but generally ok.  The heat has beaten me this year. Each year it seems to gets a bit warmer, which corresponds to worldwide measurements. It's been an odd season. There were no field birds, with Farrah catching only one. I took her to the woods after considering releasing her. Her modest number of catches, eleven, resulted in her best squirrel season ever. She contributed to the season total, which would have been respectable for a single buzzard. I hunted a lot, nearly daily, and often twice. Cisco was deadly in late December, then struggled big time after January 1. Farrah picked up some of slack, and was often a lot of fun. Their styles on squirrels are so different. There was a lot of ground cover, a significant change from last season, and getting good ambush...

Update mid February

Cisco has been struggling a bit since the beginning of 2026, mostly related to the odd vegetation and poor setups I believe. He's taken only a few squirrels over twenty hunts. Ahead of some really nasty weather late yesterday he caught one. The crash sound was amazing. Then Joe Manby and I couldn't find him even though the receiver was giving a good signal. I wondered if Cisco might be dead. Tracking a bird on the ground coupled with major bias as to where he "had to be" made a very stressful half hour at least.  Ultimately I found him trying to eat a squirrel under a live oak way out in the open. Cisco broke primaries #3, #4, and #5 on the left side. #3 and #4 primaries had already been broken and imped by Jim Ince. The repairs held up, but both feathers broke again anyway.   A great picture.... Farrah is tied for her all time season record, and has helped contribute to the squirrel catch.  The pictures below are representative.... ...

Always hunt on the way back to the vehicle

After a solid hour of chasing I got bored and was ready to call it. This is the 9th team squirrel, 7th for Cisco. It took five hunts, six outings, and about seven hunting hours since squirrel #6... That was 11/23 and he had been deadly for a week or two previously. Cisco was getting his ass beat over and over again today.  But one of my maxims is always hunt on your way back to the car. I was bored and ready to call it good. Cisco knocked this rascal off the tree fell right on top of it. https://youtu.be/oW97Xm9dl6A?si=tdiCv67stwvEHL8X
